Peel ANDROID APP : Part 1

While working at Aether I was tasked with auditing and flagging down existing usability issues of the mobile companion app. In addition to my findings I also incorporated customer feedback and findings from various metrics. In short, what you see below is a complete overhaul of the mobile app from IXD to design. In regards to the visual design, the design follows the established Aether brand with minor tweaks here and there. The work you see below is a high level overview of all the screens I redesigned. I felt it best to showcase the UX documentation part of the work in person; as this work was quite extensive.

Program Guide (EPG)

The redesigned Program Guide gives users greater ease in accessing live TV shows, movies, sporting events; all curated based on the user’s watching habits.

The redesign of the Program Guide needed to meet the following goals:

  1. Reduce visual noise so that users can easily scan categories.

  2. Make the timeline schedule more accessible.

  3. Make changing rooms more accessible.

  4. Reduce the back and forth between the EPG (aka program guide) and show details to allow uninterrupted channel surfing

Show Details

The goal was to create a show details screen that was not only functional but aesthetically pleasing. Repurposing show artwork as a background element reduced the content density considerably while giving the page a sense of refinement. This freed up space for typography to comfortably flow. Most importantly, this allowed the core features to be front and center and easily accessible to the user.

Glyph Navigation

A glyph based navigation was created to handle the growing features such as social media sources, third party sources (Netflix, Crackle, etc.), VOD, in addition to standard features. The power of this approach is that it can easily scale compared to a traditional tab navigation. Also, it resolves issues with localization. Glyphs are readily identifiable compared to words. The layout of the glyph navigation takes inspiration from a traditional analog remote. This was done to familiarize users with the new navigation approach.

Youtube & Chromecast

To strengthen user retention YouTube integration was explored. The new design gives the user the
option to stream a show’s YouTube channel or related youtube content within the app or broadcast
it to their TV via Chromecast.
